How We Got Here - Accommodation

When we had the means to, we booked and paid in advance via AirBnb. AirBnb opens up a world of regular folk willing to offer their home or a room for a cheaper fee. It won't always be a 5 star hotel but it can be significantly cheaper!

For shorter stays, we used Booking.com. It allowed us to book without paying until we arrived and offered free cancellation up until a week before our booking. This made things a lot easier for us in case plans changed. We found that staying a month at a time offered better rates and savings than if we moved around from week to week – bonus for us. So, our general rule was: hotel only for transitions or the odd luxury splash, self-service apartment for the rest. And we're wayyyy too old to stay in hostels and share bathrooms!

When planning for the UK, we signed up for a house sitting service where we house and pet sit in exchange for free accommodation (trustedhousesitters.com). We were approved for two homes which was great for us when we will be in the UK, an expensive place no matter where you are staying. They were only short weekly stays and will help us a lot. We paid a yearly fee for this site but with the money we will save, it was worth it.
